A brief guide to garden fireplaces

When it comes to outdoor heating, there are many different products to choose from. From outdoor fireplaces, garden wood burners, and fire pits to patio heaters or patio tables with built-in fires – the options are plentiful. In the following, we will take a closer look at the concept of garden fireplaces and dive into all the exciting possibilities offered by this product, designed to create both "hygge" and warmth during the summer months.

We are specialists in bioethanol fires. Therefore, we naturally offer a range of outdoor fireplaces powered by bioethanol. These are clever because they are incredibly easy to use. Furthermore, they are the environmentally friendly choice within the fireplace industry. Find a bio fireplace that perfectly complements your outdoor living space.

Our product range

In our product catalogue, you will find a wide selection of garden fireplaces crafted from various materials – including black-coated steel or the highly sought-after Corten steel. The choice of fireplace often depends on the available space; if you have plenty of room, you can opt for a larger model, whereas you should be more mindful of the dimensions if space is limited.

Corten steel garden fireplaces

Corten steel is currently one of the trendiest materials for outdoor product design. This steel has the unique property of developing a surface rust that creates the perfect weathered look, but crucially, it does not rust all the way through. This is because Corten steel is made from a very specific blend of different metals, making it an extremely weather-resistant type of steel.

Corten was originally developed to eliminate the need for painting various structures while achieving that characteristic rust-coloured finish. When exposed to outdoor elements like wind and rain, the surface oxidises. This rust layer is precisely what protects the steel, reducing corrosion by up to eight times compared to mild steel.

Corten has become incredibly popular for outdoor structures such as sculptures. A famous example is the ‘Chicago Picasso’ located in the Daley Center Plaza in Chicago. The building itself is also decorated with several Corten steel elements. Furthermore, Corten is used for major structures like the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia, USA.

The vast majority of our garden fireplaces are designed with a fitted chimney, which may bring to mind DIY projects from the 1990s where empty oil drums were cut and welded into barbecues. However, the fireplace itself is designed with a focus on both quality and aesthetics, making it a focal point in the garden.

Mexican chimeneas

Several of the fireplaces in our range are constructed from clay, which is a brilliant choice by the designers. Clay is an exceptionally good heat conductor; with just small amounts of wood, you can achieve a satisfying warmth that quickly radiates to those sitting around it. The various clay fireplaces in our range feature vibrant colours and invite a real "fiesta" atmosphere! These are typically referred to as Mexican chimeneas.

Black-coated steel garden fireplaces

The black-coated steel fireplaces in our range fit in anywhere. They are easy to assemble and their design often mirrors that of indoor wood-burning stoves. You can’t go wrong with this versatile, all-round aesthetic.

Outdoor "hygge" with a modern garden fireplace

A modern garden fireplace is the perfect choice for creating outdoor "hygge" on your patio or in your garden. With a modern unit, you can enjoy the warmth and atmosphere of live flames, even on chilly evenings. Outdoor fireplaces are designed to be both functional and decorative, serving as a central element for a cosy and atmospheric setting.

Whether you prefer minimalist black steel or the rustic charm of Corten, outdoor fireplaces are available in various sizes to suit your specific needs. Regardless of the style, a modern garden fireplace will undoubtedly add an extra dimension of warmth to your outdoor surroundings.

What about safety?

Generally, the same rules apply to garden fireplaces as to any use of open flames. However, here are a few tips to ensure safety is maintained:

  • Always have water nearby when using your fireplace.
  • Do not use lighter fluid to start the fire.
  • Never leave the fireplace unattended while in use.
  • Extinguish the fire with plenty of water after use.
  • Leave the ash in the fireplace until it is completely cold. Do not dispose of it in nature or with household waste until you are certain there are no embers left.

Is it difficult to set up a garden fireplace?

The short answer is no!
For a Mexican-inspired clay fireplace like the "Soledad", getting started is incredibly simple. You simply place the fireplace in the included steel stand, and you're ready to go. Other solutions, such as the black-coated "Fuego" ("fuego" means fire in Spanish), require a tiny bit of assembly, but it is well within the capabilities of most people. All that is required is screwing on the chimney and fastening the three legs beneath the unit.

Which modern garden fireplace should I choose?

As with indoor stoves, preferences are very individual. In our range, you will find curious, Mexican-inspired clay chimeneas that look extremely cosy and traditional. As mentioned, the clay retains heat beautifully and cools down slowly.

If you prefer a design that fits a more contemporary setting, the black-coated steel fireplaces are a safe bet. These closely resemble indoor log burners in their aesthetic. However, please note that these are not suitable for indoor use, as they require a proper flue system to vent smoke. If you are looking for an indoor solution, you should explore our bioethanol range instead. Many of our black steel models can also be used as a grill, as they come with a grate that can be placed over the embers, giving you the best of both worlds – warmth and outdoor cooking.

Corten steel models are among the most robust on the market. Because the material only oxidises on the surface, it prevents structural failure. In fact, Corten is so effective that it is used for shipping containers that face the harshest conditions at sea.

Accessories for garden fireplaces

We also offer a range of accessories. For instance, you can purchase beautifully designed log stores to keep your firewood tidy. Many of these are also available in Corten steel. We even offer log stores that can be fitted with a top plate, instantly transforming your wood storage into a functional garden seat. Additionally, safety nets can be purchased for chimney-style fireplaces to prevent birds from flying down into the flue. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our customer service team.

Why invest in a garden fireplace?

The summer period often invites outdoor socialising, but why let the evening end just because the sun goes down? With an outdoor fireplace, you are guaranteed comfortable heat in a relatively large radius. It allows you and your guests to stay outside long after dark, enjoying the glow of the wood and a cold drink. The "hygge" can continue well into the night.

How does a garden fireplace work?

A garden fireplace works by burning wood and venting smoke through a vertical chimney. These models often feature a large opening or glass front, providing a great view of the flames.

Many models feature adjustable air intakes, allowing you to control the oxygen supply and, consequently, the temperature and combustion efficiency. This helps minimise smoke and particle emissions. When choosing a location, ensure the fireplace is not too close to buildings or flammable materials and that there is good air circulation.

Benefits of having a garden fireplace

A garden fireplace adds a relaxing atmosphere to your home. "Hygge" is a vital part of Danish culture, and bringing this concept outdoors creates a wonderful environment for both adults and children. Unlike a traditional open bonfire, a garden fireplace offers a more contained and controlled fire experience.

Beyond the atmosphere, it serves as a functional heat source that can extend the use of your garden throughout the year. It can also add value and "kerb appeal" to your property, as potential buyers often look for homes with charm and well-thought-out outdoor living spaces.
